IDYLWOOD, VA — Six teens were injured in a crash Monday morning that led to a teen driver's DUI arrest in the greater Falls Church area, Fairfax County Police say.

The crash happened before 5 a.m. in the 2600 block of Pioneer Lane in the Idylwood area of Fairfax County. Police spokesperson Lt. James Curry told reporters the vehicle was likely traveling at a high speed when the 17-year-old driver lost control. The vehicle struck a tree, causing the car to spin and eject five juveniles. A sixth juvenile was extricated from the vehicle.

Curry said the vehicle occupants are between aged 14 and 17. Six juveniles were taken to the hospital in critical, life-threatening condition. The driver was wearing a seatbelt and has been arrested for DUI. After consultation with the Commonwealth's Attorney's Office, the driver was not charged on Monday. Charges are pending as the investigation continues.

"What's clear is that speed and alcohol were absolutely factors in this crash, and sadly without seatbelts being worn for the occupants, that's what likely led to some significant, serious injures," said Curry.

Curry noted police prepare for the Wednesday before Thanksgiving to be a time adults will go out drinking. But the crash served as a reminder that juveniles could be at risk for underage drinking and driving.

"It's easy to forget juveniles do partake in alcohol illegally, but it's an important reminder that kids need to be responsible, parents need to have conversations with their loved ones to make sure everyone's safe," said Curry.
