Boston Marathon: 18 Falls Church Runners Compete

About three hours after the first runners finished the 117th annual Boston Marathon, there were reports of explosions near the finish line. At least two people are dead and scores are injured. 

The Patriot-Ledger reported two booms were heard from inside the Fairmount Copley Hotel near the finish line on Boylston Street. Other media outlets reported a third explosion shortly after the first two.  

Police in DC and the surrounding area are on heightened alert this afternoon.

There were 18 runners from Falls Church registered to run the 2013 Boston Marathon, including two elite runners.

The race shut down immediately when security became a concern, so some runners may not have had the chance to finish 26.2-mile race.

Lelisa Desisa Benti was the men's winner of the Boston Marathon Monday morning with Rita Jeptoo winning the women's division, according to The Washington Post.

Benti of Ethiopia won the 117th Boston Marathon race with a time of 2 hours, 10 minutes and 22 seconds. This was his second marathon after winning a marathon earlier this year in Dubai.

Jeptoo of Kenya won with 2 hours, 26 minutes and 25 seconds. She also won the Boston Marathon in 2006.
