City of Falls Church Invites Residents to Volunteer for a Board or Commission

Volunteers are needed to serve in several boards and commissions positions.

Falls Church, VA - Volunteers who live in the City of Falls Church are needed to serve on the boards and commissions listed below. Contact the City Clerk’s Office at 703-248-5014 (TTY 711) or cityclerk@fallschurchva.gov, or visit www.fallschurchva.gov for an application and more information.

Requests for reappointment must be made through the City Clerk. Applications are accepted until the end of the month. Vacancies advertised for more than one month may be filled during each subsequent month before month’s end. The descriptions of each entity below are short summaries.   • Board of Equalization Hears and considers taxpayers' petitions regarding real estate assessments; Board has the power to order an increase or decrease, or to affirm the assessment in question.
  • Board of Zoning Appeals Hears and decides appeals with alleged errors in the administration of the zoning ordinance; grants zoning variances and special use permits.
  • City Employee Review Board Hear grievance appeals filed by City employees; select Employee of the Year.
  • Economic Development Authority Advises City Council on economic development issues and proposals; provides community education programs, conducts research, purchases, leases and sells property, provides tax exempt financing, and supports projects and programs that promote business and investment in the City.
  • Falls Church Cable Access Corporation Board Manages the affairs of the Corporation, the public arm of Falls Church Community Television.
  • Historic Architectural Review Board Reviews applications for permits to demolish or move protected structures in the historic district.
  • Historical Commission Advises on historical matters; develops criteria for the identification of historic buildings and sites; makes recommendations on recognizing and preserving such structures and sites.
  • Planning Commission Studies and recommends changes to the City's Comprehensive Plan; reviews site plans to ensure consistency with Comp Plan; prepares and revises the 5 year Capital Improvements Program; and more.
  • Towing Advisory Board Advises the City Council with regard to the appropriate provisions of the towing ordinance.
  • Fairfax Area Disability Services Board Works to include people with physical and sensory disabilities into mainstream community life through education and awareness advising elected bodies, monitoring compliance, advocating for rights, and more.
  • Fairfax-Falls Church Community Services Board Plans, organizes and provides services for people in our community who have mental illness, substance use disorders, and/or intellectual disability; provides early intervention services for infants and toddlers who have developmental delays.
  • Health Systems Agency of Northern Virginia plans for efficient/effective use of hospitals, nursing homes and other costly health resources and educates the community about health care issues.
  • Long Term Care Coordinating Council Supports inclusive communities of healthy individuals, stable families and connected residents through raising awareness of long term care needs; advocating for solutions in the community; developing community collaboration.
