Five Things You Need to Know Today: Jan. 31
Come out to Patch Night at the Mason doubleheader against Rappahannock and get a free hot dog.

- Falls Church Patch is sponsoring a hot dog giveaway at the doubleheader basketball games between George Mason High and Rappahannock High beginning at 6:15 p.m. The first 100 people to the game will receive a ticket for their free hot dog. Patch employees will also be on hand to sign people up for free Patch online newsletters and to give away free Patch items.
- The City of Falls Church Police Department is hosting an information session for city residents, business owners, and interested individuals to volunteer for the Crime Solvers Board. The session will begin at 7:30 p.m., in the Dogwood Room in City Hall.
- On this day in 1958, the U.S. launched their first artificial satellite, Explorer 1, into space.
- On this day in 1990, McDonalds opened its first restaurant in Moscow, Russia and it owns the title of the world's biggest McDonalds.
- If today is your birthday, you share it with singer Justin Timberlake (31-years-old) and the first black to break the color line in Major League Baseball, Jackie Robinson (93-years-old). Happy birthday!
