Mary Riley Styles Public Library Earns Coveted Four-Star Rating for Unprecedented Ninth Year in a Row

The Mary Riley Styles Public Library in the City of Falls Church has won the coveted four-star rating from the Library Journal, recognizing it as one of the top libraries in the country. This is the ninth consecutive year the library has received a star rating--the only library in Virginia to do so. The library is also one of only 260 in the country to receive ratings in an award system similar to that of the prestigious Michelin Guide.

The library received four stars out of five. Only two other Virginia libraries received star ratings: Loudoun County Public Library System (3 stars) and Central Rappahannock Regional Library (4 stars).

"It is very exciting to receive the prestigious Star Rating, and for the ninth year in a row!” said Mary McMahon, Library Director. "This honor confirms that the library is providing excellent services for the community. I am so proud of the library staff for making this possible."

Every year, the Library Journal groups libraries by total operating expenditures then compares the levels of library service to those of other peer libraries nationally. The measurement includes library visits, circulation, program attendance, public Internet terminal use, and electronic circulation. Then the services of more than 7,300 public libraries are measured and used by the library industry to determine best practices and trends in library use.
