Mason Softball, Baseball Complex to Get Lights Next Week

Light poles were delivered Monday and crews have already started wiring the complex for the lights.

George Mason High School’s softball and baseball matchup at home under the lights against Madison County High on April 2 moved a step closer Monday.

The poles that will hold the lights were delivered to the softball and baseball complex and will more than likely go up next week. Work crews have already started wiring the complex to support the lights.

“It will bring the element of a Friday night, like at a football game,” said first year varsity softball Head Coach Brian Fowler. “It allows parents to come out now. Before the games used to start at 5 p.m.”

The George Mason Athletic Boosters is raising the majority of the $450,000 it will cost to put the lights up. The Falls Church City Public School board voted to approve $110,000 toward the project. School officials said once the lights are up at the complex, the backstop at the baseball field, which was damaged during the Derecho, will be replaced.

Lights at the complex have been a long time coming, said Head Baseball Coach Adam Amerine. The later start times will allow more fans to get to the games that used to start at 5 p.m. The 7 p.m. starts should help fill the stands at both fields, he said.

“It’s big time,” Amerine said. “We’re one of the last schools in Northern Virginia to get lights at the baseball field.”
