BAILEY'S CROSSROADS, VA — The Fairfax County Park Authority held an official ribbon-cutting ceremony on Saturday for the Boyd A. and Charlotte M. Hogge Park, a new park in Bailey's Crossroads that features a playground, multi-sport courts for pickleball and basketball, and community gardens.

Supervisor Penny Gross, who represents the Mason District on the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors, was joined by Jai Cole, executive director of the Fairfax County Park Authority, Ronald Kendall, Mason District representative on the park authority board, and other county officials who helped with the $2 million park project.

The 6.1-acre site, at 3139 Glen Carlyn Road, two blocks from the border with Arlington County, was purchased by the park authority from Charlotte Hogge and her children in 2006. The Hogge family lived on the property for a few more years under a lease agreement with the park authority. The family's house was demolished when the park authority took control of the property from the family.

In 2010, the park authority began a planning process for the proposed park that involved “extensive community input,” Gross said at Saturday’s ceremony.

The community had several requests, including maintaining the open character of the site without any formal athletic fields, support for less intensive recreational facilities, and a strong interest in community gardens, Gross explained.

“As you look around here today, you can see how these priorities of our neighbors were thoughtfully incorporated into an excellent design that brings such an added value and amenity to the community,” she said.

The park's 34 garden plots are located in raised beds surrounded by a fence. The plots can be rented for a season for $80, with priority will be given to nearby residents.

The park opened to the public in late 2022, but the county waited until spring to hold the official ribbon-cutting ceremony. Along with two pickleball courts and a basketball court, the park features a picnic pavilion and grill, a trail, and a parking lot.

Bright Construction Group served as the contractor for the park project. The new park was funded by voter-approved park bonds.
