By the Numbers: A Successful, Busy Summer at the Mary Riley Styles Public Library

FALLS CHURCH, VA - It was a busy summer at Mary Riley Styles Public Library with over 2,000 readers of all ages signed up for the Library’s Summer Reading program. Of those, 130 adults and 1,044 children and teens successfully completed the program, together reading over 21,717 books.

The Library Foundation raffled off four Kindle Fires and gift certificates to One More Page Books. Each prize was awarded to four teens and four adults that completed their summer reading goals. Additionally, these local businesses generously donated coupons that were awarded to kids who read on their own and teens who finished the Summer Reading program: Clay Café & Studios, Doodlehopper 4 Kids, Elevation Burger, Eye Level Learning Center, Flippin’ Pizza, Foxes Music Co., Lazy Sundae, The Local Market, One More Page, Original Pancake House, Starbucks Coffee at Falls Plaza and Broaddale Shopping Center, Victory Comics, The Happy Tart, and Zinga Frozen Yogurt.

The Library also hosted different programs during the summer months, with nearly 8,000 attendees taking part. One such program was the PlayDate Café – a program for children, birth to 18 months, and their caregivers, for which Starbucks at Falls Plaza graciously provided the coffee.

All of this activity kept the Library’s teen volunteers very busy! Together, the 94 teen volunteers logged a total of 397 hours.

Congratulations to all that participated and completed the Summer Reading program, and thanks to those that came out to the Library’s events or volunteered their own time to assist. A special thank you goes out to the Library Foundation and the local businesses who provided the prizes for this year’s program.
