Some Tax Prep Software Gives Incorrect Filing Address for Falls Church Residents

City residents file with Commissioner of the Revenue; County residents file with state.

FALLS CHURCH, VA -- With tax day quickly approaching, the City on Thursday is cautioning that many tax preparation software companies provide an incorrect filing address for Falls Church addresses within Fairfax County. Falls Church residents can determine if they live within the 2.2 square miles of the City of Falls Church or the Fairfax County portions of Falls Church by visiting fallschurchva.gov/AddressFinder.

"Each year the City receives hundreds of tax documents from Fairfax County residents that should be mailed directly to Richmond," said Tom Clinton, City of Falls Church Commissioner of the Revenue. "That could cause a delay in processing those returns. We've been trying for years to correct the filing address error in tax prep software, but the change is slow."

City of Falls Church City residents can mail their tax returns to the Commissioner of the Revenue, 300 Park Avenue, Suite #104E, Falls Church, VA 22046-3301. This office can only process City of Falls Church resident tax returns.

Fairfax County does not process their resident’s tax returns locally; instead, they are all sent directly to Richmond for processing. Residents who live in Fairfax County and expect a tax refund should mail tax returns to Virginia Department of Taxation, PO Box 1498, Richmond, VA 23218-1498. Residents who live in Fairfax County and owe tazes should mail tax returns to Virginia Department of Taxation, PO Box 760, Richmond, VA 23218-0760. The Virginia Department of Taxation can be reached at 804-367-8031 orwww.tax.virginia.gov.

The Commissioner of the Revenue recommends following these steps to ensure tax returns are filed properly:

  1. Write the locality code on the tax return or estimated payment voucher. The City of Falls Church is 610 and Fairfax County is 059.
  2. Write a cell or home phone number on the tax return or estimated payment voucher so you can be easily reached in case of a question.
  3. Sign and date the check (if any) and tax return.
