5K Honors Fallen Spotsylvania Deputy Dean Ridings
The October 12 Virginia Law Enforcement Torch Run will benefit the Virginia Special Olympics.

The Spotsylvania County Sheriff's Office will host the Second Annual Dean Ridings Memorial 5K Walk/Run on October 12 in honor of the fallen Spotsylvania County Deputy.
Deputy Ridings lost his life in a boating accident while on marine patrol on Lake Anna on June 19, 2010. Deputy Ridings, a former Marine, had served for six years with the Spotsylvania County Sheriff’s Office.Â
"Deputy Ridings was an avid runner and loved spending time outdoors with his family," a sheriff's office spokesperson said. Both his sons currently are deputies with the Spotsylvania County Sheriff’s Office.
Preregister is $40 through October 7, and includes a dri-fit shirt. Registration after October 7 -- including race day registration -- is $50. Shirts are not guaranteed after October 7. Register online at FirstGiving.
The Sheriff’s Office will also be collecting canned and boxed food items at packet pickup to benefit the Fredericksburg Area Food Bank. A list of items needed is on the food bank's website.
Packet pickup will be in the Spotsylvania County Sheriff’s Office lobby:
- Friday, Oct. 11, 12 - 8 p.m.
- Saturday, Oct. 12, 7 - 8 a.m.
The 5K starts and stops at the Spotsylvania County Sheriff's Office, 9119 Dean Ridings Lane, Spotsylvania. Â Money raised from this event will benefit Virginia Special Olympics.
Awards will be presented to top law enforcement participants and to the top three participants in all age groups.
