Spanberger Claims Victory In Virginia's 7th Congressional District

FREDERICKSBURG, VA — Abigail Spanberger has claimed victory in Virginia's 10th congressional district. The race has been called by the Associated Press.

"Thanks to your hard work, we have won this race," Spanberger told supporters at a watch party on Tuesday night. "Tonight is a night to celebrate."

The race was between incumbent Democrat Spanberger and Republican challenger Yesli Vega. Vega currently sits on the Prince William Board of County Supervisors representing the Coles district.

With more than 200 of the district's 226 reporting, Spanberger holds a slim lead of about 5,000 votes, according to unofficial results.

In her victory speech, Spanberger thanked Vega and her supporters for their commitment to the democratic process. She also thanked her family, campaign staff, and community members across the district.

"Thank you, and I look forward to serving you all again these next two years," Spanberger said.

The 7th district generally "leans Democrat," according to the 2022 Cook Political Report's House race ratings.

Spanberger has represented the 7th district since 2019. She sits on the Committee on Agriculture and the Committee on Foreign Affairs. She previously worked as a CIA officer.

Vega was elected to the Prince William Board of County Supervisors in 2019. She works with the Prince William County Sheriff's Office and previously worked as a police officer in Manassas Park and the City of Alexandria.

Unofficial election results are starting to come in on the Virginia Department of Elections website now that polls have closed.

Patch spoke to several voters on Election Day who discussed what issues were most important to them on their ballot.

One voter in Woodbridge said she was focused on reproductive rights for herself and her two daughters.

Other voters mentioned concerns about inflation, the economy, gun control, and social justice.

"At the end of the day, we all have things we believe and have to vote accordingly," voter Matthew James told Patch.
