Columbus Day Schedules and Events This Week

Fredericksburg area schedules and events for the week of Oct. 14 - 18, 2013.

MONDAY, Oct. 14 is Columbus Day, a federal holiday.

  • Virginia Rail Express (VRE) will run an "S" (special) schedule.
  • Fredericksburg City offices, Spotsylvania County offices and Stafford County offices are closed.
  • City of Fredericksburg trash and recycling changes are as follows: Monday’s trash will be picked up Tuesday, Tuesday’s trash will be picked up Wednesday. Monday and Tuesday’s recycling will be picked up on Tuesday. Wednesday through Friday, collections will proceed as usual.
  • The Belman Road Recycling Center and the Stafford Landfill will be open normal hours (8 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.) on Monday. Spotsylvania County's Livingston Landfill is open regular hours, 7 a.m. - 3 p.m.
  • James Monroe High School will play its rescheduled Homecoming football game at 7 p.m. in Maury Stadium against King George High School.
  • The Architectural Review Board is scheduled to meet at 7:30 p.m. in City Council Chambers at City Hall, 715 Princess Anne St.
TUESDAY, Oct. 15
  • Leadership Fredericksburg Alumni Builder will be held 8:30 - 10 a.m. at the Fredericksburg Regional Chamber of Commerce.  Please RSVP.
  • Preschool Palette: Bridget’s Beret -- introducing children ages 2-5 to art and museums -- will be held at 10 a.m. at Gari Melchers Home and Studio at Belmont, 224 Washington St., Falmouth.  $8. RSVP at 540-654-1851.
  • CNEW Luncheon is from 11:30 a.m. - 1 p.m. at the Fredericksburg County Club.  $20, Chamber members; $30 non-members.

THURSDAY, Oct. 17
FRIDAY, Oct. 18
  • Business 101 Series: Human Resources, 8 - 10 a.m. at the UMW Center for Economic Development.  $12

  • UMW's symposium 'James Monroe: Life and Legacy' will feature lectures from an array of scholars covering political and cultural themes of President James Monroe’s life.  Free.  Both Friday and Saturday's first sessions begins at 9 a.m. and final sessions begins at 3:30 p.m.  his event is free and open to the public, and does not require advance registration.
