Deputies Shoot Armed Man, Bystander Outside Fredericksburg Gas Station
State police are investigating after deputies shot a wanted man and a bystander during a traffic stop, authorities said.
FREDERICKSBURG, VA — State police are investigating after Spotsylvania County deputies shot a wanted man and a bystander Saturday night in Fredericksburg, according to authorities.
Deputies from the Spotsylvania County Street Crimes Task Force tried to apprehend 37-year-old Lawrence D. Toler II of Woodford shortly before 9 p.m. during a traffic stop at a gas station in the 3000 block of Plank Road, state police said.
As deputies approached Toler’s vehicle, he tried to flee, backed into a police vehicle and pointed a gun at a deputy, at which point multiple deputies fired shots, striking Toler and a man who was standing outside the station, according to police.

Toler was taken to Mary Washington Hospital with life-threatening injuries, police said. The bystander was treated for minor injuries and released from the hospital, according to police, who said no one else was hurt.
Toler is wanted out of Chesterfield on multiple felony warrants, police said, adding a gun was found in a his vehicle.
