James Monroe – Life & Legacy (October 2013)
The Papers of James Monroe and the James Monroe Museum are pleased
to present “James Monroe: Life and Legacy,” a two-day symposium
examining the life, legacy and interpretation of the 5th
president of the United States. This event will be held October 18-19 on
UMW’s Fredericksburg campus. Additional details regarding presentation
times and locations will be forthcoming.
Speakers will present on the following topics:
- “James Monroe: A Life in Portraits,” Daniel Preston, editor, The Papers of James Monroe
- “The Legacy of the Monroe Doctrine: American Power and its Limits,” Jason Davidson, associate professor of political science, University of Mary Washington
- “James Monroe and Historical Legacy,” Brook Poston, assistant professor of history, Stephen F. Austin State University
- “The Enslaved Community of President James Monroe with a Focus on Loudoun County,” Lori Kimball and Wynne Saffer, The Thomas Balch Library, Leesburg, VA
- “Interpreting James Monroe at Highland and the James Monroe Museum,” Scott Harris, director, James Monroe Museum and Memorial Library and Sara Bon-Harper, executive director, Ash Lawn-Highland
- “Music in the Life of James Monroe and His Family,” Katherine Preston, Bottoms Professor of American Music, The College of William & Mary
- “Artifacts from the Monroe Museum,” student presenters (to be announced)
- “James Monroe: A Life & Legacy in 3 Acts” – Jarod Kearney, Jay Harrison and Dennis Bigelow

The symposium will conclude with the 26th annual Monroe Lecture,
featuring three historical interpreters who will present Monroe’s
perspective from three different periods of his life. We look forward to
welcoming Jarod Kearney, Jay Harrison and Dennis Bigelow for “James
Monroe: A Life & Legacy in 3 Acts.”
