Live Grenade Found in Fredericksburg Home Tuesday

Relatives cleaning up a house found a World War II era grenade Tuesday afternoon. No one was injured during the removal.

Relatives cleaning out a house in the 400 block of Riverside Drive in Fredericksburg found a live World War II era grenade in the bottom of a trunk.

A person at the house called 911 when the grenade was found in the trunk, with other personal affects related to service in the military during the war.

Fire Department units responded and met with the party at the home and gathered further information, said Fredericksburg deputy fire chief Mike Jones in a release.

A bomb technician from the Virginia State Police Bomb Squad was requested to come to the scene for assistance, said Jones. 

"The bomb technician entered the home, located the device and determined it was live ordinance [sic]," said Jones in a release. "The technician secured the device and removed it from the residence for proper disposal. No damage was done to the residence and no injuries occurred. All units were clear within 1 hour of the initial call."
