Did You See Them? Mammatus Clouds Over Fredericksburg

Mummatus clouds, a fairly new cloud classification, were seen over the Fredericksburg area Thursday evening.

Mammatus clouds were in the sky over the Fredericksburg area about 8 p.m. Thursday.

Mammatus clouds are named for the Latin word "mamma", meaning udder or breast. You can see why. "They form when the underside of a thundercloud, laden with ice crystals, cools the air below and condenses the moisture in it," according to i09.com. The clouds usually appear when a storm is clearing.

A friend noticed the clouds over Fredericksburg as we drove on Lafayette Blvd. after having dinner downtown. Later, two Fredericksburg Patch readers submitted their photos -- unsolicited -- on Facebook. Take a look.
