NoVA Man Arrested On Drug Charge Near UMW Campus: State Police

A Northern Virginia man apprehended by Fredericksburg police was wanted for eluding a police pursuit in July, reports say.

FREDERICKSBURG, VA — The Fredericksburg Police Department apprehended a 28-year-old Annandale man on Friday evening who was wanted by the Virginia State Police , according to the state police.

Around 7 p.m., FPD issued an alert saying that a wanted individual might be located in the area of the Battleground Athletic Complex on the University of Mary Washington campus.

"The FPD received a tip about a wanted individual believed to be in the city, possibly near the University of Mary Washington campus," according to an FPD spokeswoman. "Officers coordinated with the UMW Police Department for additional support. FPD units successfully located and apprehended the suspect. Following the arrest, the individual was transported to FPD headquarters, where custody was transferred to VSP."

State police arrested Avery J. Owen of Annandale, who was wanted on warrants for fleeing a police pursuit in July, according to a VSP spokesman.

Owen is scheduled to be arraigned Tuesday morning in Fredericksburg General District Court on a possession of schedule I or II drugs charge, in connection to Friday's arrest.

Owen will also be arraigned on more than a dozen other charges ranging from resisting arrest and eluding police to receiving/buying stolen goods and being a violent felon possessing/transporting a weapon, according to court documents. These charges stem from a July 13 incident in the Fredericksburg area.
