Fairfax County Board of Supervisors, Mount Vernon District from January 2016 – present day. Environmental Committee Chairman, Audit Committee Chairman, Economic Advisory Commission Vice-Chairman, Economic Initiatives Committee Vice-Chairman.

Why are you seeking this office?

I’m inspired, energized and thankful for all that the Mount Vernon community means to me and many of you. Together we have made great progress in connecting our community, bringing more than $3 billion in public and private funding to revitalize the Richmond Highway and Lorton communities, providing life-long learning opportunities and helping every resident and business owner reach their full potential. I am proud to have served the residents and businesses of the Mount Vernon District for the past two decades. There is still much to do and I look forward to our continued success!

What are the major differences between you and the other candidate seeking this post?

People, leadership and management experience matter in getting things done. My life’s work has been about caring for people and our planet, beginning with my early twenties volunteer work for the environment and providing food, health care and housing for the neediest, to my continuing record as a driver of environmental protections and the Board’s Environmental Committee Chairman, my former education and non-profit leadership and now ongoing championing of our many health, housing, and social support organizations. Meeting these needs and protecting our world means making sure that they/we all work together, well; that we are inclusive, our increasingly urban area has housing for all and healthy, effective, well-designed, pedestrian, bike and transit-friendly connections. I bring decades of broad public and private experience serving and building positive relationships with all types of people and delivering results for the Mount Vernon District and Fairfax County.

What do you see as the top issues facing Fairfax County, and how do you address them in your campaign platform?

My top priorities continue to be improving the lives of families in the District through investments in education, housing, environment, transportation, public safety and the kind of economic development that ensures all have opportunities to live, learn, work, play and grow older in the Mount Vernon District. I am proud to keep and continue keeping our County as the safest jurisdiction of its size in the country.

One of the most pressing issues in our District continues to be the revitalization of Richmond Highway and Lorton. We have been successfully working together re-envisioning Lorton and the Highway, investing by fully funding education, and delivering new parks, new public safety facilities, new housing of all types, new businesses, ‘The One’ Bus Rapid Transit system, pedestrian and cycling improvements, and so much more, all while making sure no one is left behind.

A second high priority issue is housing. The Mount Vernon District has a wide range, variety, and great diversity of all types of housing, including many lower cost, substantial middle-income and some of the most expensive housing in the DMV. The smart growth housing and community development policies that I helped initiate, plan, fund and implement in 2016 have resulted in the past two years alone building or preserving more than 1,000 units of workforce and affordable homes while more than a thousand middle income homes were built or started construction. Housing, especially our starter and “missing middle” homes, are expensive and I am supporting more being built on our corridors to offer individual and families houses they can afford.

What accomplishments in your past would you cite as evidence you can handle this job?

I bring a voice of experience, thousands of community relationships and a proven track record for getting things done, while delivering results for the South County area. We live in a growing, vibrant and very desirable area, although the most pressing issue in our District continues to be the revitalization of Richmond Highway and Lorton. We have been successfully working together, securing more than $2B of public and $1B of private investments to date, re-envisioning Lorton and the corridor, investing in education, bringing new parks, new public safety facilities, new housing of all types, new businesses, ‘The One’ Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system, pedestrian and cycling improvements and much much more; while helping folks who grew up here continue to remain here.

One of many examples of my leadership is my 2018 Fairfax Green Initiative adoption by the Board of Supervisors and a key County accelerant for getting the goals, policies, plans, funding and now implementation of energy efficiency and greenhouse gas reductions that will get our communities carbon neutral by 2050 or before. My initiatives led to the aggressive goals the County and community have set and are now implementing through the JET, CECAP and Resilient Fairfax plans. I look forward to continuing that leadership to achieve these crucial goals.

What else would you like voters to know about yourself and your positions?

I am a thoughtful, balanced, listening leader and team builder who values people, partnerships and public engagement in all that we are doing and will do for our communities’ revitalization and, most importantly, helping our residents, owners and community to reach its full potential. In other words, getting things done that matter. That personal commitment, my work and quality relationships with others are why I have been consistently asked to lead for many decades in all of the public, non-profit and for-profit organizations with which I have been affiliated. I am very enthusiastic about continuing this work on your behalf for another four years!
