West Potomac High School Fundraiser Brings Together Generations
School's engineering club will host a 'Fun Fly' fundraiser Saturday.

Model airplane enthusiasts can show off their skills at West Potomac High School’s sixth annual indoor Fun Fly event Saturday.
The Fun Fly features a Walk-Along glider race, as well as model planes for static displays. The event is for remote control and free flight planes. There will be prizes as well as kids’ activities.
The Fun Fly is a fundraiser for the engineering club that helps pay for Technology Student Association (TSA) competitions and project supplies. Technology and engineering students as well as community members participate in the Fun Fly. Students have about a month to prepare for the Fun Fly.

“It exposes the kids and adults to remote control planes,” WPHS Educational Engineer Joe Franco said. “It’s a generational thing. The students experience the activity with the older generation that they may not have otherwise been exposed to, and the older generation gets to pass on their knowledge. Lots of these guys are military veterans who flew planes in combat, and this is their hobby now.”
Engineering club president Munni Khattak has been involved with the club since her freshman year. Now that she’s a junior, she is excited to be coordinating the Fun Fly.

“It’s always been my dream to do this,” Khattak said.
