BELLE HAVEN, VA — Without community leaders, greater Alexandria wouldn’t hum along nearly as smoothly as it does. We’d miss their contributions in big and small ways.

Patch has partnered with T-Mobile to recognize these often unsung community leaders and celebrate their contributions.

This submission comes from Deborah Klein Hammer, a Greater Alexandria reader who nominated Glenda Booth.

What does this community leader do?

She is the president of a National Park friends group and works hard to create inclusive, free educational activities for the community that help people learn about the natural world. This includes virtual and in-person programs for children and adults. She also has worked hard to preserve and enhance the park, Dyke Marsh, do outreach to underserved populations at community events, writes about events in the community, and lobbies for funding and support. She motivates and inspires others to volunteer and care about the environment. She has also been involved in other volunteer projects, including creating a memorial to the Suffragettes at Lorton.

Why do you believe the community leader should be recognized or honored?

She has given so much of her time and energy to preserving the environment and educating others. She is a true inspiration as she motivates people of all ages to learn, volunteer, and just get outside and appreciate our natural world.

What's one thing you want everyone to know about the community hero?

Glenda is very humble and I don’t think she realizes what an impact she has on others through her selfless work preserving the park, creating free educational programs, inspiring others to volunteer their time, and doing community outreach.
