4 VA Sandwich Shops Among 100 Best In America, New Ranking Says
Yelp recently compiled its list of the Top 100 Sandwich Shops in America. See which VA eateries made the cut.
If you didn’t already know, August is National Sandwich Month. If you want to observe it by chowing down on some of the best handhelds in America, four sandwich shops in Virginia get strong customer reviews.
The places in Virginia that made Yelp’s review-based list of the Top 100 Sandwich Shops and their ranking nationally are:
No. 32: Happy Cafe, Virginia Beach

Happy Cafe was established in 2016 in Blackstone, home of owner/chef Tomeka Wallace. The eatery specializes in signature sandwiches, smoothies, homemade bread pudding, gourmet macaroni and cheese and more.
“We loved the Happy Cafe. You may come in unhappy, but you will leave filled with nothing but joy,” one customer raved. “The service was amazing. The food was very delicious.”

No. 73: Gertie’s, Vesuvius
A staple in the small Rockbridge County community of Vesuvius, Gertie’s resides inside an old gas station, which was turned into a country store and deli in 1998. In 2019, the business was sold to Jake and Kaylee Griffin, who currently run the small store as a restaurant.
Gertie’s is known for their half-pound burgers, homemade BBQ and chicken cheese steak sub.
“Wide variety of food and all of it is great,” one customer noted in a recent review. “We just happened to stumble upon this place and couldn't be more happy with everything. Great food and great owners who you can tell do this out of passion and love.”
No. 79: Cafe X-press, Salem
Cafe X-press is a family-run shop offering up a variety of sandwiches, wraps, burgers, paninis and more. Some options include the chicken tandoori sandwich, the Little Italy panini and the Ginger Burger.
“Some of the best sandwiches in the area!” one customer raved. “The couple that runs the business is super nice, and the food is always very consistent and flavorful. Give the tandoori chicken sandwich or burgers a try!”
No. 80: Twisted Sweets & Savory, Herndon
Twisted Sweets & Savory describes itself as a casual eatery where comfort meets culinary creativity. The eatery offers a diverse menu of “chimney sandwiches” and other goods that are sure to satisfy all appetites.
“I finally found my favorite sandwich spot! Twisted Sweet and Savory did not disappoint!” one reviewer gushed. “The flavors were on point, the bread was perfectly toasted and every bite was packed with goodness.”
In its inaugural Top 100 Sandwich Shops list, Yelp said affordable sandwiches are having a moment and are increasingly going gourmet.
Yelp reviewers “love all the new house-made aiolis, chutneys, pâtés and sauces these chefs are adding to their creations,” the site says. “Diners also give high praise to unique, delicious toppings like pickled vegetables and olive tapenade, as well as artisanal breads like fresh ciabatta, garlic bread or pretzel buns.”
