Fairfax Democratic Committee Endorsements, Primary Races Revealed

Fairfax County Democratic Committee reveals candidates running in June primary and endorsements for November election in uncontested races.

FAIRFAX, VA — Last Thursday was the deadline for candidates to file for the Democratic Party's nomination in the 35 partisan races that are on the ballot in Fairfax County.

“The 2023 primary picture is now clear, and races are in full swing," said Bryan Graham, chairman of the Fairfax County Democratic Committee, in a release. "The Fairfax Democrats are committed to winning all 50 races in the county this year. With the many talented and capable candidates running in this cycle, we are confident we will make that commitment a reality. I am excited to watch the democratic process unfold as we head toward the June 20th primary.”

Fairfax County voters will be heading to the polls on Tuesday, Nov. 7, to choose candidates running for the Virginia House of Delegates, the Virginia Senate, the Commonwealth's Attorney, Clerk of the Fairfax Circuit Court, Fairfax County Sheriff, Chairman of Fairfax County Board of Supervisors, District Members of the Board of Supervisors, At-Large Members of the Fairfax County School Board (vote for 3), District Members of the School board, and Directors (vote for 3) of the Northern Virginia Soil and Water Conservation District.

FCDC certified the following candidates for the June 20 primary:

  • Chairman of the Board of Supervisors: Hon. Jeffrey C. McKay, Lisa M. Downing
  • Commonwealth Attorney: Hon. Steven T. Descano, Edward J. Nuttal
  • Sheriff: Hon. Stacey Ann Kincaid, Kelvin Garcia
  • State Senate
    • District 33: Jennifer Carroll Foy, Hala Ayala
    • District 35: Sen. David W. Marsden, Heidi Marie Drauschak
    • District 36: Sen. George Lincoln Barker, Stella G. Pekarsky
    • District 37: Sen. J. C. “Chap” Petersen, Saddam Azlan Salim, Erika M. Yalowitz
  • House of Delegates

Fairfax County Democrats will be choosing which candidates the party will be endorsing for the three at-large seats on the school board and the three seats on the Northern Virginia Soil and Water Conservation District Directors during the 2023 Democratic Endorsement Caucus.

Online voting will take place from May 13, at 10 a.m. to May 20, at 4 p.m. In-person voting will take place on May 20, from 10 a.m.- 4 p.m., at locations to be announced at a future date.

Those wishing to cast a ballot in the caucus must be a registered voter and must be pre-registered for the caucus. Pre-registration opened on Monday and closes on May 5.

The following races will be voted on during the May 20 caucus:

  • School Board
    • At-Large: Ilryong Moon, Lawrence Webb, Kyle McDaniel, Hamid Munir, Ryan McElveen
    • Hunter Mill District: Paul Thomas, Melanie Meren
    • Mount Vernon District: Mateo Dunne, Harold Sims
  • Soil and Water: Chris Koerner, Mary Paulet, Rhonda Bitterli, Dana Barakat

Since the following candidates are running in uncontested races, FCDC has endorsed them as its candidates on the Nov. 7 ballot:

  • School Board:
    • Braddock District: Rachna Sizemore Heizer
    • Dranesville District: Robyn Lady
    • Franconia District: Marcia St. John-Cunning
    • Mason District: Ricardy Anderson
    • Providence District: Karl Frisch
    • Springfield District: Sandy Anderson
    • Sully District: Seema Dixit
