
Hosea Edwin “Sonny” Greene, 78, a retired Virginia firefighter and Air Force veteran went to be with his Lord on January 17, 2015 at the Lower Cape Fear Hospice Care Center after battling acute leukemia.
He was born on February 6, 1936 in Danielson, CT, the only son of the late Shirley and Loretta Despathy Greene. His family moved shortly thereafter to Niantic and then ultimately to New London. Sonny attended Tech School in Norwich, CT and then enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and served four years active duty as a firefighter at Turner Air Force Base in Albany, GA before moving to Alexandria, VA. In 1962 he continued his firefighting career by working for the Federal Aviation Administration’s Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting Branch (which later became the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority) at Washington Dulles International Airport. In all, he served 28 years, eventually reaching the rank of Assistant Fire Chief. After retirement Sonny spent nine years with the Fairfax County Police Department working as a school crossing guard in Herndon, VA. He was also a skilled handyman and an amateur cook, who delighted all with his Italian cuisines. He was a longtime resident of Herndon, VA before moving to Leland, NC in 2011.
Sonny was a dedicated family man and loved by all who knew him. He is survived by his wife of twenty- nine years, Constance Greene; daughter, Theresa Marcolini and husband Michael; son, Joseph Greene; daughter, Kirsten Greene; daughter, Dawn Nalepa; three grandchildren, Connor, Morgan and Ryan; and three sisters, Joyce Newman, Phyllis Miranda and husband Leo, and Marjorie May; and his beloved canine companion “Lexi”. Also remembered is his sister, Carole Carroll, who preceded him in death.

A Celebration of Life Funeral Mass will be held at St. Mark Catholic Church in Wilmington, NC at a later date.
