Jennifer Boysko Out-Raises Matt Lang In 38th State Senate Race

HERNDON, VA — Democrat Jennifer Boysko has out-raised her Republican opponent Matt Lang, in the race to represent the 38th District in the Virginia Senate, according to the latest campaign finance filing.

Boysko's campaign reported on Sept. 15 that it received $81,649 between July 1 and Aug. 31, according to the Virginia Public Access Project. In comparison, Lang's campaign received $22,334 for the same reporting period.

In total, Boysko's campaign received $81,649 in cash contributions of more than $100, $4,087 in cash contributions of less than $100, and $368 in in-kind contributions, during the reporting period. Adding that to a starting balance of $226,571 and subtracting $97,645 in expenses, the campaign had an ending balance of $215,029 on Aug. 31.

Boysko's top six donations for the reporting period were:


  • $20,000 - Baltimore Washington Construction & Public Employees Laborers PAC
  • $10,000 - Service Employees International Union
  • $5,000 - Firefighters-Local 2068
  • $2,500 - Firefighters-Prince William
  • $2,500 - HCA (Industry: Hospitals/Health Systems)
  • $2,500 - VA Dental Assn

Boysko also collected donations for Democratic Party advocacy via the Run Everywhere Virginia PAC. In 2023, the PAC received $378,876 in donations and made $320,000 in contributions to Democratic Party committees. The PAC also reimbursed Boysko $5,600 on Aug. 28 and donated $5,139 to ActBlue Virginia, an Arlington County-based Democratic Party advocacy group.

Run Everywhere Virginia's top six donors for 2023 were:

  • $150,000 - Dominion Energy
  • $100,000 - American Federation of Teachers
  • $75,000 - Diane Marburger
  • $25,000 - Vinton G Cerf
  • $20,000 - Patrice Comey
  • $20,000 - Democratic Victory PAC

During the 2023 General Assembly session, Boysko represented the 33rd District in the state senate. She is running as the incumbent in the new 38th District, which includes the Town of Herndon, Reston, Great Falls and McLean.

Lang's campaign received $14,176 in cash contributions of more than $100, $2,120 in cash contributions of $100 or less, and $6,038 in in-kind contributions, according to VPAP. Adding that to a starting balance of $21,470 and subtracting $15,444 in expenses, the campaign had $28,359 left in the bank on Aug. 31.


Lang's top five donations for the reporting period were:

  • $1,000 - Chris Kennedy
  • $1,000- Howard Norton
  • $1,000 - Steve Stormen
  • $950 - Alan Blair
  • $750 - Harry Lowcock

Lang also received seven donations of $500 each from Andy Boyer, Mary J Lowcock, Olga Marinenko, Aizen J Marrogi, Kevin Matthews, Lola C Reinsch, and Geraldine Smith.

The next campaign filing deadline is Oct. 16, which will include each candidate's contributions and expenditures for September.

The first absentee ballots for the General Election were mailed on Friday, Sept. 22, which was also when early voting begins. Early voting will continue through Nov. 4, which is three days before Election Day.
