Labor Day 2019 In Herndon: What's Open, What's Closed

The unofficial start of fall is right around the corner. Here's what to expect as far as what will be closed in the area on Labor Day 2019.

HERNDON, VA — For some people, this is the most wonderful time of the year: schools are opening, football is back on TV, and the trees are getting ready to fade from green. It also means Labor Day is almost here.

Labor Day is a federal holiday always celebrated on the first Monday in September. It is intended to honor the American labor movement and the contributions workers have made to this country. Labor Day was started in the late 19th century, promoted by unions which organized the first parade in New York City.

Labor Day means lots of closures in our area, but some places will be open. Here's what you can expect for Herndon:

Town of Herndon offices: All Herndon government offices will be closed, reopening on Tuesday.

Fairfax County Offices: County offices will be closed on Labor Day, and will reopen on Tuesday.

State Offices: Commonwealth of Virginia offices in Fairfax County will be closed on Labor Day, including Circuit Court, General District Court and Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court.

Fairfax County Public Schools: Schools will be closed on Labor Day.

Fairfax County Community Centers: Closed on Labor Day.

Fairfax Connector and Fastran: Fairfax Connector bus service will operate on a Sunday schedule on Labor Day. See www.fairfaxcounty.gov/connecto... for more information. Fastran will not operate on Labor Day.

Fairfax County Libraries: Closed on Labor Day.

Metrorail: The system will operate on a Sunday schedule. Parking will be free at all Metro parking facilities, and off-peak fares will be in effect all day.

Metrobus: Buses in the county will operate on a Sunday schedule.

Parking: Parking is free at park and ride locations and Metro parking lots.

Parks: Parks will be open on limited hours in some cases. For more information, visit fairfaxcounty.gov/parks/holiday-hours.

Trash and Recycling: Contact individual Fairfax County and private service providers for holiday hours.
