National Night Out is Tuesday, 'Union of Color and Form' Opens, and More

Find out what's going on around Herndon this week.

This Tuesday is National Night Out! According to Town representatives, 14 neighborhoods have signed up to hold block parties or neighborhood gatherings this year, which is the 14th year the Town of Herndon has participated.  National Night Out started in 1984 as “America’s Night Out Against Crime - an effort to promote involvement in crime prevention activities, police-community partnerships, neighborhood spirit, and to send a message to criminals letting them know that neighborhoods are organized against crime." Members of the Town of Herndon Police Department and the Mayor and Town Council will be circulating amongst the gatherings, getting to know residents and sharing information of neighborhood crime prevention programs. An exhibit by a man with a truly extraordinary life opens at ArtSpace in Herndon Tuesday. “Union of Color and Form” features paintings by Duy Lam. Says the staff of ArtSpace, Lam was a Lt. Colonel of the Army of the Republic of Vietnam (ARVN). After the Vietnam War ended in 1975, he was imprisoned in the communist concentration camps for 12 years and endured many years of torture and solitary confinement. In 1985, PEN International Congress elected him as an Honor Member. In 1990, Lam immigrated to the United States with his family. He was awarded the Freedom Expression award of the Human Rights Watch Organization in New York, 1992 and was the Vietnamese who received the best prize in poetry. Now, painting has ultimately become the culmination of Duy Lam’s lifelong passion for fine arts. The exhibit will run through Sept. 1, and a reception for Duy Lam will be held this Saturday night, Aug. 10, from 6-8 p.m. For more information, visit www.artspaceherndon.com.
