Sophomore John Proctor placed at his first tournament of the season by going 2-3 for the tournament and earning 6th place at 195lbs. Proctor got a pin over Chopticon’s Matthew Long and a 4-3 decision over Sherwood’s Nick Rickert to reach the placing round.
Old Mill dominated the field, with four champions, five finalists and 199 points to claim the team title. A balanced Sherwood team finished in second, followed by High Point to round out the top three teams.
In what is usually a two-day tournament, the organizers were forced to run the tournament as a one-day event due to impending snow forecasts in the southern Maryland area and school closings on Saturday. This meant that the round of 16 was changed to a single-elimination, meaning the loser would be eliminated from the tournament and would not have an opportunity to wrestle back in the consolation bracket. After the round of 16 was completed, the tournament was then run as a normal double-elimination format for the duration of the night.
The Hornets will return to action this Wednesday, Jan 11. at Robinson Secondary School in a “Beauty and the Beast” gymnastics-wrestling event. Herndon will square off against Robinson and Oakton in wrestling and girls gymnastics. Action is set to start at 6pm.
