Sales-Tax-Free Back-to-School Shopping, Golf Tournament to Benefit the Arts and More
A quick glimpse at the week ahead in Herndon and nearby this week.

Herndon Patch recently debuted our new briefs that offer readers a quick snapshot of the daily news.
Each Monday, we offer 'The Week Ahead,' to help set up your week and plan for key news and events.
1. School starts in a little under six weeks, so you’ve got time – but you might want to consider doing your back-to-school shopping this coming weekend, Friday to Sunday, Aug. 2-4. Why? It’s Virginia’s August Sales Tax Holiday on School Supplies and Clothing. During this three-day period, purchases of qualifying school supplies selling for $20 or less per item, and purchases of qualifying clothing and footwear selling for $100 or less per item, will be exempt from sales tax, thanks to the folks at the Virginia Department of Taxation. Some retailers are choosing to offer tax breaks on additional items as well to lure in shoppers, so you could score yourself some good deals on lots of shopping this weekend. See the VDT’s website for more information.
2. Support crime-solving efforts in Fairfax County and get some exercise this Sunday, Aug. 4 with the inaugural Crime-Solvers 5k Race, presented by Fairfax County Crime-Solvers and Capital Area Runners. The USATF-approved course starts at the Fairfax Corner Shopping Center and weaves through nearby roads. The race will be chip-timed, courtesy of raceDCTiming.com, and results posted. The 5k kicks off at 8 a.m., and a fun kids’ race kicks off at 8:45 a.m. More information and registration is available online.

3. Bye Bye Birdie is a popular show this summer – most likely due to this year being the 50th anniversary of the classic musical’s movie version. If you just can’t get enough of Conrad Birdie and the MacAfees, there are two weeks left to see The Sterling Playmakers’ production on the Potomac Falls High School stage, 46400 Algonkian Parkway in Sterling. Remaining shows are Fridays and Saturdays, August 2, 3, 9, and 10, at 8 p.m., and Sundays, August 4 and 11, at 2 p.m. All tickets are $15 general admission, and are available at the door or online in advance at www.sterlingplaymakers.com.
4. There’s still time for your child to have fun in the Town of Herndon Parks and Recreation Department’s Summer Fun Camp, this week and next week. Camps are for children ages 3 to 11. Children 3-6 have short-day options, and 6 and older can attend full-day camp. Each week has a different theme. There are also specialty camps such as basketball, gumnastics and more. To see all the different options, times and prices, visit the Parks and Recreation website.

5. As if you needed an excuse to play hooky from work for a few hours and play a round of golf, here’s one for you – the 16th annual Jimmy’s Old Town Tavern Golf Tournament to benefit the Council for the Arts of Herndon. This beloved tournament features all-day fun, with a variety of raffle prizes from golf bags to free dinners at local restaurants that you can win. Proceeds fund the many functions of the Arts Council, including scholarships and arts programming in the local public schools and senior center. The tournament begins at 8 a.m. at the Herndon Centennial Golf Course. For more information or to see if foursomes are available, call the Town at 703-689-9535.
