VIRGINIA — Gov. Ralph Northam declared a state of emergency Tuesday afternoon due to Tropical Depression Ida, according to a release.

The storm is expected to bring heavy rains across the state, creating flood conditions along the I-81 and I-66 corridors. Portions of southwestern Virginia have already seen heavy rainfall in recent days, causing flash floods and making storm preparations more difficult.

Officials also warned residents of the risk of tornadoes from late Tuesday through Wednesday, according to a release.

“My thoughts are with those across the country impacted by this devastating storm,” Northam said in a release. “While we’re fortunate in Virginia to have avoided the hurricane itself, heavy rainfall is expected to cause additional flash flooding and dangerous conditions in portions of the Commonwealth. I’m grateful to the first responders and rescue crews currently on the ground, and I urge Virginians in these regions to stay alert.”

As the storm continues to move out of southwestern Virginia, heavy rains may lead to flash flooding, as well as downed trees and power lines. This will affect local roadways, with the I-81 and I-66 corridors expected to experience a huge impact from the storm. Power outages may also occur.

With a state of emergency in effect, Virginia will be able to deploy resources, including personnel and equipment, to help in the response to the storm and assist in the recovery efforts. In addition, local officials will be able to coordinate their own emergency response to the storm.
