Weekend Food for Kids Helps Address Food Insecurity

Assistance League Program Provides Food for Elementary Students

Temperatures are cold, but hearts were warm at our recent Weekend Food for Kids event. Assistance League of Northern Virginia’s army of volunteers gathered again to pack 1840 bags of nonperishable food. The food was then delivered to six Title 1 elementary schools: three in Fairfax County and three in Prince William counties. Along with the food delivery, we also provided grocery gift cards to an additional school in Alexandria, and gift cards for emergency use at the six schools receiving food bags.

This amazing task could not have been accomplished without our partners at Dominion Energy, who offer the space in their building, provide volunteers to help pack the food and then transport the food to the schools. Also joining us this month was a group of volunteers from Northwest Federal Credit Union. Community support such as theirs allows us to continue to serve the most vulnerable students in our schools.
