HERNDON, VA — New Year's Day, the holiday celebrating the start of 2023, falls on a weekend. As a result, Monday will be an observed holiday with various closures in Herndon.

The Town of Herndon and Fairfax County government offices will be closed on Monday, Jan. 2. Other services have schedule changes on Monday and surrounding days.

Below are the openings and closures to know for the New Year's holiday around Herndon:

Town of Herndon government offices: Closed on Jan. 2.

Fairfax County government offices: Closed on Jan. 2.

Fairfax County Public Schools: Winter break is Dec. 19 to Jan. 2.

Herndon Community Center: Open 7 a.m.-4 p.m., on Dec. 31. Closed Jan. 1-2.

Community centers: Fairfax County's Neighborhood and Community Services centers will be closed on Dec. 31 and Jan. 2.

Bready Park Tennis Center: Open 7 a.m.-2 p.m. on Dec. 31, and closed Jan. 1-2.

Herndon Centennial Golf Course: Open 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m., on Dec. 31, with the New Year's Eve Golf Tournament starting at 10 a.m. The course will be open from 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. on Jan. 1 and Jan. 2, weather permitting.

Courts: Fairfax County Circuit Court, General District Court and Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court are closed on Jan. 2.

Department of Motor Vehicles: All DMV customer service centers are closed Jan. 2.

Fairfax Connector: Fairfax Connector will have Sunday service on Jan. 1 and 2. For more information, visit www.fairfaxcounty.gov/connector.

Libraries: Herndon Fortnightly Library and all Fairfax County Public Library locations will close at 5 p.m. on Dec. 31 and be closed on Jan. 1 and 2.

Metro: Metrorail will be open 7 a.m. to 2 a.m. on Dec. 31 into Jan. 1. Metrorail and Metrobus will be free after 8 p.m. until closing. Some Metrobus route will be extended until 3 a.m. Metrorail will operate on a Sunday schedule from 7 a.m. until midnight on Jan. 1 and 2. See more information on Metro's website.

Post offices: Closed on Jan. 2.

Recreation centers: Fairfax County recreation centers are open until 4 p.m. on Dec. 31 and are closed on Jan. 1.

Trash and recycling: In the Town of Herndon, recycling normally collected on Monday will be collected on Tuesday, Jan. 3. Fairfax County collection customers will have no changes to collections. Private collection customers should check with their hauler for any changes.

Christmas Tree Collection: Town of Herndon customers will have their Christmas trees collected on their regular trash days on Jan. 4-6 and Jan. 11-13.

Trash and recycling centers: The Recycling and Disposal Centers at the I-66 Transfer Station (4618 West Ox Road) and the I-95 Landfill Complex (9850 Furnace Road) close at 2 p.m. on Dec. 31 and are closed Jan. 1.
