Fireworks Manufacturers Promoting Illegal Fireworks

The County Fire Marshal's office is reminding residents to stick with legal fireworks.

While stocking up for the Fourth of July, stay on the right side of the law by sticking to legal fireworks purchases, the Fire Marshal's Office reminds county residents.

"Fireworks manufacturers have begun promoting the sale of illegal fireworks in residential neighborhoods throughout the county," said Kim Hylander, Public Information Specialist for the PWC Department of Fire and Rescue. "The colorful and detailed magazines display an assortment of fireworks from bottle rockets to shell kits all at discount prices allowing the consumer to shop without leaving the comfort of their home."

Since possession of illegal fireworks is a Class 1 misdemeanor, punishment may mean a fine of up to $2,500 or up to a year's stay in jail.

The local fireworks stands have been approved by the Fire Marshal's Office.

"No firework is safe and the best way to protect your loved ones from fireworks-related injuries or worse is to not use fireworks and enjoy fireworks displays provided by professional organizations," Hylander concluded.
