Lattin Resigns From School Board to Spend Time With Family

Following that he was resigning from the school board, Lattin spoke with Lake Ridge - Occoquan Patch about his reasons for resignation.

School board member Grant Lattin wants to focus on being a family man.

His evening work as the Occoquan Magisterial District member of the Prince William County School Board, along with his demanding day job as an attorney for the U.S. Department of the Navy, left him little time to connect with his wife and the two children still at home.

"I spend all my day doing that and then I come home and spend a good portion of my evening doing school board stuff," he said. "At some point, i just finally decided to spend more time with my wife and children."

After recently being , some might be tempted to attribute Lattin's resignation to the pressures of weathering this season's with the rest of the board. 

"But as I said in my resignation letter, it's for personal reasons. I just need to spend more time with my family," he said. The school budget season factored "not at all" into his decision. "Just the overall responsibilities of being a board member. It just has taken a lot of time away from me being able to spend time with my family. I just finally decided that I needed to focus more on that area." 

Right now he has a college-aged son and another child in high school.

As Lattin looks back over nearly nine years of service on the school board, he doesn't remember individual accomplishments as much as he remembers how well the board often worked together. 

"I tried to do what was best for children. Is there any single accomplishment -- I can't think of anything. We as a board worked well together, and anything that we did was a decision by at least five members of the board. I am reluctant to take credit for any single board action," he said. 

Now that he's dialing his level of responsibility back down, he said he's looking forward to finding new things to do with his wife and kids, saying he hasn't had time for a hobby in several years.

"I haven't had time to do anything else in almost nine years," he said.

Lattin had no thoughts on who might be replacing him. 

"The board I'm sure will in due time announce a process for receiving applications," he said. "The board itself will appoint someone. The last time this occurred, the board had a specific schedule."
