Weekend Travel: Weather and Closures

As you head into this weekend, make your travel in and around the region easier by using this handy guide to closures in the area. As always, you can check live traffic information on the Patch Commute tab.

This weekend will be much warmer than last weekend, with temperatures reaching the low 90s. Last weekend's weather was mild: the perfect weekend for the Occoquan Craft Show.

Drivers can expect up to two of three lanes to be closed overnight this weekend on southbound I-95 near Russell Road (Exit 148) as crews mill and pave the bridge deck. Work will take place from 8 p.m. until 6 a.m. Friday and Saturday nights (June 8-9), and may continue Sunday night, June 10 from 8 p.m. until 4 a.m. Monday morning.

On June 9, Gallows Road (Route 650) will be closed at the Inner Loop side of I-495 from 10 p.m. to 9 a.m. on June 10 for overhead sign installation. Emergency vehicles will still be allowed to pass through the work zone to INOVA Fairfax Hospital. Drivers using Exit 51 to Gallows Road will also be able to drive to the hospital. If there is bad weather, the project will pick up again the night of June 10.

Detours: For southbound traffic on Gallows Road toward Annandale, take I-495 north to Exit 50B for Arlington Blvd (Route 50) east, follow it to Graham Road south, turn right on Annandale Road south and continue following signs to Gallows Road. A map of the detour route is available here.

For northbound traffic on Gallows Road toward I-495/Merrifield, take Gallows Road south, turn right onto Annandale/Hummer Road, turn right again onto Little River Turnpike (Route 236) west and continue following signs to I-495. A map of the detour route is available here. 

Be advised that any detours may add 10-20 minutes to your travel time. 

According to Virginia Megaprojects, other major highway closures between 9:30 p.m. and 5 a.m. include: 

• I-495 south to Exit 45B, Dulles Connector Rd. (Route 267) east. Ramp closed Wednesday-Friday nights for bridge painting. Traffic will be directed to continue south to Exit 46B, Chain Bridge Rd. (Route 123) north and follow signs to Dulles Connector Rd. (Route 267) east.
• I-66 west at the Dulles Connector Rd. (Route 267). Right lane closed Monday - Friday nights for barrier movement.
• I-66 east from Exit 67, Dulles Connector Rd. (Route 267) to Great Falls St. overpass. Left lane closed Friday and Saturday nights for material movement.
• Dulles Connector Rd. (Route 267) east from Trap Rd. to Spring Hill Rd. Two left lanes closed Friday and Saturday night for bridge work.
• Dulles Connector Rd. (Route 267) east from I-495 to Exit 19, Dolley Madison Blvd. (Route 123). Road closed Wednesday - Friday nights for bridge painting. Traffic will be directed to take I-495 south to Exit 46B, Chain Bridge Rd. (Route 123) north and follow signs to Dulles Connector Rd. (Route 267) east.  
• Dulles International Airport Access Hwy. east from Centerville Rd. (Route 657) to Leesburg Pike (Route 7). Road closed Sunday - Tuesday nights for bridge work. Traffic will be directed to the Dulles Toll Rd. (Route 267) east.
• Dulles International Airport Access Hwy. east from Trap Rd. to Leesburg Pike (Route 7). Right lane closed Wednesday - Friday nights for bridge work.

According to Virginia Megaprojects, there will be temporary closures lasting up to 30 minutes on:

• I-495 north from Robinson Terminal to Georgetown Pike 
• I-495 south from Georgetown Pike to Heming Avenue underpass
• Dulles Toll Road east at I-495
• I-66 west from Leesburg Pike to Gallows Road overpass
• I-66 east from Nutley Street to I-495
• Gallows Road north and south at I-495

In the Lake Ridge area, alternating lanes of Old Bridge Road are shut down Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. for ongoing utility and road widening work. For more county and regional road and lane closures, see VDOT's spreadsheet.
