LTE: Daniels Does Not Share Tea Party Values

For those of you who have yet to decide upon whom to vote for in the 33rd House of Delegates District, let me assure you that Dave LaRock is the only option. Not only is he the candidate with the best understanding of the top issues in our region (transportation, education and the economy), but he is also the candidate who will listen to you, the constituent, with regard to your questions and concerns, whether he agrees with you philosophically or not. 

Let me elaborate on my experience with Ms. Daniel at the candidates’ forum at Clarke County High School on Monday, Oct. 7. In both her opening and her closing statements, Ms. Daniel made oblique references to a “divisive, radical ideology.” After the forum, as the candidates were milling about, I approached Ms. Daniel in an effort to get some clarification with regard to these statements. Ms. Daniel stated that she was referring to the Tea Party. I asked what values of the Tea Party she disagrees with, and she spat, “I think you know.” Having never met Ms. Daniel before and only having heard her speak on this one occasion, I did not know. So, pursuing the matter, I explained that the primary Tea Party value was fiscal responsibility, a value that she says she believes in. At this point, her escorts gathered around her and she began walking away. “But Mary,” I called after her, “Is it the Constitution that you find objectionable?” (I asked this question as a constitutionally limited government is the second of the Tea Party values.) She hissed over her shoulder that she was very familiar with the Constitution, carries one with her at all times, and has read it, “unlike yourself.” (Thereby indicating that I had never read the Constitution. Again, I had never met this woman before and to the best of my knowledge she knows nothing about me.) I never had a chance to discuss the third Tea Party value with her (individual responsibility), as by this time her handlers were gathered around her and swiftly escorting her out of the building.

What very strange behavior from someone seeking public office! While she is seeking my vote (presumably) and makes claims that she will represent her constituents well (and with “moderation”) in Richmond, she behaves in a hostile manner when she perceives that someone may not agree entirely with her views. How in the world can she make a credible claim that she will be able to work with legislators from all over the Commonwealth with a wide variety of perspectives? Furthermore, how will she ever be able to represent my interests when she refuses even to have a civil conversation with me?

In an effort to give her one more opportunity to clear the air and her good name, approximately one hour after our exchange, I sent her an e-mail message via her website, the only way that I could find to get in touch with her. To date, she has not responded to me.

In contrast, Dave LaRock’s behavior has always been the polar opposite from that of Ms. Daniel. I have met Dave a few times and have seen him respond to numerous people’s questions with honesty and civility. Never once have I known Dave to turn away from someone in mid-conversation, regardless of whether the person appears to agree with his views or not. Moreover, if you want to contact Dave, he posts his cell phone number on his website!! No joke! He actually wants you to call him if you have any questions for him. Now that’s somebody who really wants to represent ALL of the people of the 33rd House District!!
