LORTON, VA — An 89-year-old man died from injuries in a crash Saturday morning on Route 123 in the Lorton area, according to the Fairfax County Police Department.

Lloyd South of Fairfax Station was traveling east on Route 123 (Ox Road) in a 2014 Nissan Frontier around 9:40 a.m., according to police. South drove through a stop sign and collided with a 2018 Volvo XC90, police said. The impact caused the Volvo to spin, then collide with a highway sign in the median and into the guardrail.

The driver and passengers of the Volvo remained on the scene and were treated for non-life-threatening injuries at the hospital, according to police.

South was taken to the hospital where he died one day after the crash, police said.

The police do not believe that speed or alcohol were factors in the crash.

Police did not indicate on what part of Route 123 the crash occurred. FFXnow reported the fatal crash happened on Route 123 near Workhouse Road.

Fairfax County police said this is the 12th fatality of a driver or occupant in a vehicle so far in 2023. In all of 2022, 10 people in vehicles died in crashes in the county, according to police.
