2. On Oct. 20, 1944, U.S. General Douglas MacArthur returns to the Philippines after famously proclaiming: "I shall return", and takes the islands from the Japanese.

3. In 1968, former First Lady Jackie Kennedy marries Greek shipping magnate Aristotle Onassis. She kept the Onassis name after his death in 1975 until her death in 1994 at the age of 64.

It's the birthday of famed "Dracula" actor Bela Lugosi (1882-1956), New York Yankee Mickey Mantle (1931-1995), American musician Tom Petty (b. 1950), U.S. Secretary of Labor Hilda Solis (b 1957), American actor Viggo Mortensen (b. 1958), American rapper Snoop Dogg (b. 1971), "The Office" actor John Krasinski (b. 1979) and Al Quaeda operative Abu Musab al-Zarqawi (1966-2006).
