1. The London Gazette, the oldest official journal of British record, was founded. 

2. On Nov. 7, 1908, famed American outlaws Butch Cassidy (Robert Leroy Parker) and the Sundance Kid (Harry Alonzo Longabaugh) were reportedly killed in San Vicente, Bolivia. 

3. U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt was elected for a record fourth term. He died five months later at 63 after 12 years in office.

4. On this day in 1967, Carl B. Stokes was elected the first African American Mayor of Cleveland, Ohio. Twenty-two years later to the day, David Dinkins was became the first black Mayor of New York City and Douglas Wilder became the first African American Virginia Governor. 

5. Famous birthdays: Britains adventurous Captain James Cook (1728-1779) was born today. Other notable birthdays include Polish Nobel Prize winner Maria Sklodowska-Curie (1867-1934), Russian revolutionary Leon Trotsky (1879-1940), Nobel Prize winner and writer Albert Camus (1913-1960), American evangelist Billy Graham (b.1918), Canadian musician Joni Mitchell (b.1943), the director of the Central Intelligence Agency  David Petraeus (b.1952) and American documentary filmmaker Morgan Spurlock (b.1970).
