Fire On Deck Of Lorton Home Causes $125K In Damage

Smoking material discarded in a flowerpot at a Lorton area house started a fire that caused $125,000 in damage, according to fire officials.

LORTON, VA — Smoking material improperly discarded in a flowerpot on the deck of a Lorton area house started a fire Monday that caused $125,000 in damage, according to the Fairfax County Fire & Rescue Department.

Units were dispatched to the house in the 7500 block of Cullum Street in the Lorton area shortly before 6 p.m. on Monday. When the units arrived at the one-story, single-family house, fire was visible from the back of the house.

Fairfax County fire crews were able to rapidly extinguish the fire.

Two people were in the home at the time of the fire. One of them discovered the fire when he observed fire from the back of the house. He alerted the other person, and they were able to get out of the house safely before the fire department arrived. Smoke alarms in the home sounded after the fire was discovered.

No occupants of the home or firefighters were injured, the department said.

Fire Investigators said the fire was accidental in nature and started on the rear deck of the house when the smoking materials were placed in the flowerpot.

The three residents who were displaced by the fire declined Red Cross assistance, the department said.
