Four Juveniles Charged With Lorton Playground Fire

Equipment was a total loss

Fairfax County Fire and Rescue announced the arrest of four juveniles in the that destroyed a playground inside the Luvelle W. Dupell Park in the Newington area of Lorton.

According to Dan Schmidt, spokesperson for Fairfax County Fire and Rescue, the four were charged with destruction of property greater than $1,000 and destruction of property less than $1,000. Two of the juveniles were also charged with vehicle tampering and one was charged with grand larceny than $200.

Three of the juveniles live in the Hayfield section of Fairfax County, while the fourth is from Virginia Beach.

Judy Pederson of the Fairfax County Park Authority said efforts are underway to replace the playground, which was valued between $45-50,000. Pederson said the Park Authority would like to have a new playground in a few months. She said equipment must first be priced, purchased and then resources must be made available to install it.

“There are a lot of variables with something like this, but we are hoping for sooner rather than later,” Pederson said.
