Girls' Soccer Teams Drop Openers

SoCo and Hayfield will be looking for first win when they face each other on Friday

The South County girls’ soccer team dropped a 4-1 decision in their season opener yesterday to a powerful Centreville team.

The Stallions were playing shorthanded as East Carolina-bound Kelley Johnson did not play due to injury and Summer Petterson, who signed a scholarship to East Tennessee State last month, was limited to 15 minutes of playing time.

South County trailed only 1-0 at the break, but a pair of Wildcat goals in the first five minutes made the lead insurmountable. Caitlyn McLaughlin got the Stallions on the board by netting a goal with 20 minutes remaining.

“We made some mistakes and they took advantage of them,” said coach Maureen Saale. “We got exactly what we deserved in terms of a result. “

Saale believes that ultimately the Stallions will benefit from playing such a quality opponent once Patriot District begins. Her squad will try to bounce back on Friday at Hayfield in another out-of-district match-up.

The Hayfield girls’ soccer team will also be looking for their first win on Friday. Coach Ruben Bolognesi’s team dropped a tough 3-2 double overtime decision to Lee High School last night.

The Hawks led to 2-1 and 1-0, but were tied with nine minutes remaining before falling in the second extra session.

Finally, the Hayfield boys soccer team lost to Lee 4-2.
