1. On Oct. 24, 1926, Harry Houdini made his last performance at the Garrick Theatre in Detroit, Michigan. Suffering from Peritonitis, Houdini had a 104 degree temperature and passed out onstage. After being revived, he concluded the performance and was taken to Grace Hospital, where he died on Halloween at age 52. 

2. This day in 1929, also known as "Black Thursday", spelled doom for millions. The stock market crashed, the U.S. economy went with it and the Great Depression followed.

3. The United Nations was founded on Oct. 24, 1945. 

4. Terrifying: D.C. Sniper John Allen Muhammad and his accomplice Lee Boyd Malvo are arrested on Oct. 24, 2002.

5. English soccer star Wayne Rooney turns 26 today. Other Oct. 24 birthdays include Batman creator Bob Kane (1915-1998), Malaysian King Sultan Ahmad Shah (b. 1930), Academy Award-winning actor F. Murray Abraham (b. 1939), Academy Award-winning actor Kevin Kline (b. 1947) and South Dakota Governor Michael "Mike" Rounds (b. 1954).

7. The weather today will be partly sunny with a high near 70. The evening will see a low of about 45, with a light breeze, according to the National Weather Service
