1. On this day in 1760, Britain's George III became king after the death of his father George II. As King, George III lost the American colonies, went crazy (reportedly shook hands with a tree mistaking it for the King of Prussia) and lived longer than any previous British ruler. 

2. On Oct. 25, 1962, Adlai Stevenson, the U.S. Secretary to the United Nations, revealed pictures to the UN that the Soviet Union provided missiles to Cuba.

3. Also on this date in 1962, Nelson Mandela was sentenced to five years in prison. He went on the run, but was caught in 1964 and spent the next 25 years at Robbens Island. 

4. It's the birthday of Spanish cubist artist Pablo Picasso (1881-1973), Austrian composer Johann Strauss II, Austrian composer (d. 1899), American explorer Richard E. Byrd (1888-1957), American comedian Minnie Pearl (1912-1996), American basketball coach Bobby Knight (b. 1940), American political strategist James Carville (b. 1944), "the voice of Bart Simpson" Nancy Cartwright (b. 1957) and American singer Katy Perry (b. 1984).

5. Scared of zombies? Today at 7:00 p.m., Max Brooks, the author of "The Zombie Survival Guide", will share his new book at the Fairfax County Government Center. “10 Lessons for Surviving a Zombie Attack" is available for sale and signing. 

6. The weather today will be sunny with a high temperature of 68. The evening will be mostly clear with a low of about 44, according to the National Weather Service
