Lorton Landfill Fire Causes Significant Smoke

LORTON, VA — A fire at a Lorton landfill is prompting an ongoing fire department response Monday night into Tuesday, according to Fairfax County authorities.

The fire happened at a private landfill in the 9900 block of Richmond Highway in Lorton. Crews have been working on the large outdoor fire since 11 p.m. Monday. The fire produced a significant amount of smoke visible in the Richmond Highway and Interstate 95 corridors. There were no reported injuries.

While firefighters have the fire under control, work continued midday to extinguish it. According to the fire department, the fire involves mainly logs and brush at the landfill. Hazmat units determined atmospheric monitoring readings are normal, according to the county government.
