Update: The Lorton Road bridge over Giles run is now open!
The bridge was partially washed away by Tropical Storm Lee last month. The project was anticipated to take eight weeks, but will open a month ahead of schedule thanks to the Virginia Department of Transportation and its contractor Shirley Contracting Company.
"I have expressed my thanks to all the agencies and personnel who worked to get this project completed in record time," said Mount Vernon District Supervisor Gerry Hyland in an email. "I now thank everyone who was inconvenienced by this road closure for your patience during this trying time."

The wing walls at the bridge on Lorton Road were washed away, and sections of the roadway were severely damaged. Crews replaced the entire bridge superstructure with steel beams and a timber deck topped with asphalt. A new guardrail was also installed.
Lorton Road is the second of six roads and bridges to re-open to traffic this week. Hunter Mill Road re-opened earlier this week; Essex Road in Springfield is scheduled to open in September; Towlston Road over Rocky Run in early November; Beech Mill Road over Nichols Branch in Great Falls in mid-November and the bridge on Hillside Road in Springfield by Thanksgiving.
