Photos of the Day: The Quilters of Mount Vernon

When life gives you scraps, make a quilt!

The Mount Vernon chapter of Quilters Unlimited meets every Tuesday in the Hollin Hall Senior Center. The 85 members are currently preparing for their annual auction, which will be held at the Senior Center on November 1. Some quilts bring in $300 at auction.

"Most people name their quilts. They become very attached to them," said Ruth Morgan, president of the Mount Vernon Quilt Guild.

Jim Melton of Alexandria has been quilting since 1980. "It's relaxing and I enjoy creating art on cloth. It's a great hobby," he said, adding that it takes about three to four months to create a quilt. "I've probably done about 50 quilts. The largest was a queen size quilt. That took a year."
