South County Girls' Soccer Advances in Districts, Trouncing Annandale 5-0

Put it all together for a blowout victory

The South County girls’ soccer team has struggled with injuries for most of the year and their lack of good health was the primary reason they had a relatively low fourth seed in the Patriot District playoff bracket. But last night they showed why there was so much anticipation heading into the season, as the Stallions’ dominated Annandale from start to finish, 5-0.

Annandale had trouble keeping possession in South County’s end of the pitch as the home-standing Stallions were constantly on the offensive. South County’s goals came from seniors Kelley Johnson, Caitlyn McLaughlin, Liz Hodges—who had two—and freshman Andi Sullivan.

The Stallions will take on top-seeded Woodson on Wednesday. The Cavaliers won 3-2, when the teams played on April 6. But back then South County was still hobbled by injuries. This time around the Stallions—though not at full-strength since Summer Peterson is out with a torn meniscus—are in better shape. “We’re healthy, so we have a chance,” Coach Maureen Saale said.

Last night’s game was called with approximately three minutes left in the second half when lightning appeared in the skies. The subsequent downpour caused the South County–Woodson boys’ game to be postponed to tonight, when the weather doesn’t look to be too much better.
