2. The first run of the famed long-distance Orient Express train left Paris for Vienna on October 4, 1883. While the train service was discontinued in 2009, the Venice-Simplon Orient Express, an American-owned vintage 35-car full-service train runs across Europe from March to November.

3. Earth would never be the same. On Oct. 4, 1957, the Russians launched Sputnik I, the first man-made space satellite, into space. The launch would also ignite the space race.
