Sputnik, Mexico and the Sun

Welcome to October 4, 2011! 

1. On this date in 1824, Mexico adopts it's new constitution and becomes a federal republic. 

2. The first run of the famed long-distance Orient Express train left Paris for Vienna on October 4, 1883. While the train service was discontinued in 2009, the Venice-Simplon Orient Express, an American-owned vintage 35-car full-service train runs across Europe from March to November. 

3. Earth would never be the same. On Oct. 4, 1957, the Russians launched Sputnik I, the first man-made space satellite, into space. The launch would also ignite the space race. 

4. Local Politcs: It's candidates night for the Mason Neck Citizens Association. The group is meeting at Gunston Hall to see these candidates:

5. The weather today will be partly sunny with a high near 69. The evening will be mostly clear with a low temperature of 48, according to the National Weather Service.
