Update: Attic Fan Caused Springfield House Fire

Three people were displaced.

resulted from an electrical malfunction in an attic fan, according to Fairfax County Fire and Rescue officials. The blaze in the 8700 block of Etta Drive sent two firefighters to the hospital with minor injuries.  

Red Cross support was not needed, according to the Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department. 

At around 3 p.m., firefighters "initiated an initial interior attack with hand lines from the second floor of the structure but were forced to retreat and perform a brief exterior fire attack due to the roof becoming weak and collapsing onto the second floor," according to a Fire and Rescue news release. "Crews then utilized elevated master stream operations and exterior hose lines to knock down the fire and then re-entered the structure to complete the extinguishment."

Damage is estimated to be $320,000.
