Girl Shot By Family Member Cleaning Gun In Manassas: Police

MANASSAS, VA—A man was arrested Tuesday after accidentally shooting a 17-year-old girl while cleaning his handgun in the Red Roof Inn at 10610 Automotive Drive, according to Prince William County Police. Ivan Dario Cortes, 50, of the 2000 block of Logmill Road in Haymarket, was charged with reckless handling of a firearm and possession of marijuana.

Shortly after 11:45 p.m., police responded to the motel for a reported shooting. They found that Cortes had been cleaning his gun when it discharged and hit the girl—a family member—in the lower body. She was flown to a nearby hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries. Cortes was released on a summons.
